Expressing Empathy

In an interview with Brené Brown, Ph.D., she references Theresa Wiseman’s four defining attributes of empathy:

"Expressing empathy or being empathic is not easy. It requires us to be able to see the world as others see it, to be non-judgmental, to understand another person’s feelings, and to communicate your understanding of that person’s feelings."

Brené talks a lot about how we should avoid "at least" statements when trying to emphasize with people. These statements may sound like, "At least you have...", "At least you didn't..." This minimizes and invalidates someone else's experience and isn't seeking to understand them.

It's not always easy to empathize, but in order to do so, we have to work at being able to see the world as others see it. This is important work even in the workplace.
